Water and mold damage affects not only the structure of your house but also your belongings.

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy understands that your home is more than a structure; your family’s furniture, clothing, keepsakes, and other belongings help transform a house into a home.

Any home can quickly become infested with mold if a source of water is present. Mold can spread throughout the property in as little as 48 hours.

We specialize in restoring contents damaged by fire, water, or mold. Our expertise and “restore” versus “replace” mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. We pretest your contents to determine what items can be restored back to their condition before the water and mold damage. We utilize several methods of cleaning your contents, including:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.

  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.

How Do I Know If I Have Mold in my Canby Home?

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

One of the many questions SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy gets on a regular basis is “How do I know if I have mold?”

Mold requires moisture and a food source to grow such as wallpaper, drywall or other organic building materials. In most cases, mold grows from having high humidity in your home or business, a non-ventilated bathroom or a recent water loss. However, if you believe that you do have mold growing in your home or business it is best to have a qualified environmental lab take samples. An environmental lab will be able to explain the testing process and provide results based off of the samples taken from your home. Based off of those results, they provide recommendations on how the mold would need remediation. Then, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy can take those results and recommendations to properly re-mediate the home or business of any microbial growth.

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy has the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at (503) 655-7735 available 24/7!

Different Types of Mold

8/13/2018 (Permalink)

From the Ordinary

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Even though some forms of mold can pass value to our lives, other forms of mold can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusion can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide a food source for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health hazard for your family and pets.

If you suspect your property has a mold problem, call SERVPRO of Gresham at (503) 655-7735 for 24/7 assistance!!

Mold Prevention in the Beavercreek Area

2/27/2018 (Permalink)

Have you ever gotten mold in your home or business?

The kitchen is one of the most susceptible areas of the house to mold growth and it is very easy for mold to occur there if preventative actions are not taken. It is important to keep kitchens mold free because this is the same space in which food is prepared and consuming mold can be harmful. Preventing mold from growing in your kitchen is quite simple and it only takes a few preventative actions to ensure that your kitchen is safe, otherwise, you may need a professional mold remediation service like SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy.

The kitchen has a higher level of moisture in it than most other rooms of the house and as a result, surfaces such as the wall may become moldy. If there is some mold growth on the wall, make sure to remove it and keep an eye on that area as mold is likely to grow back in the same spot if the humidity rises again.

  • One option for preventing mold growth on the walls is using mold resistant paint which is water resistant and will prevent mold from penetrating through the painted layer. Adding mold resistant paint to your kitchen will also rejuvenate the look of the kitchen walls.
  • Another way to prevent mold from growing in your kitchen is to make sure your kitchen is dry and free of standing water. As you do the dishes or clean up the kitchen, water can get into small spaces around the sink which increases the risk of mold. It is important to dry the water from these hidden places as they are the most likely places for mold to grow with or without the excess water. After you clean your kitchen, use a separate towel to dry the water from the counters, cracks, floor, and other areas that are wet.
  • Humidity is another common cause of mold growth and limiting the humidity within the kitchen will greatly decrease the risk. The best way to keep the humidity down within the kitchen is by opening the windows and making sure there is always good ventilation. It is important to remember that excess moisture, standing water, or high humidity is at the root of every mold outbreak and the key to keeping your kitchen mold free is eliminating each of these sources. Keeping mold out of your kitchen will not only contribute to a cleaner space but also make it a safer place to prepare food.

If you do happen to find more mold than you can safely clean yourself, contact a professional such as SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy.

How to Prevent Mold from Growing on Your Sandy Property

1/9/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growth can be common in Oregon; do you know how to prevent it?

Any home or commercial property can quickly become infested with mold if a source of water is present. Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. Some household situations that lead to mold growth include:

  1. Clogged gutters and downspouts
  2. Leaky plumbing
  3. Leaky roofs
  4. Using hot water without venting the steam to outdoor air.

Also, when indoor air is warmer than outdoor air, moisture can collect on cold surfaces like single pane windows, uninsulated walls, pipes and roofs.

Ways of preventing household mold:

  • Install double-pane windows or insulation to keep moisture from collecting on cold surfaces.
  • Inspect and repair leaks in roofs, gutters, foundations and plumbing.
  • If you rent, consider taking pictures of moisture problems and documenting the situation with your landlord.

What Causes Mold in Clackamas County Commercial or Residential Structures?

Molds can germinate in a warm, moist environment where a food source is present. How fast growth occurs depends on the combination of conditions. Spores can begin to grow after only 12 hours in some conditions and some can grow into colonies in 24 to 48 hours. Houses offer a large food supply—drywall, wood, insulation, indoor dirt, and paper. When these materials become damp or wet, settled spores can become growing molds. Water damages offer opportunities for molds to grow and multiply, since moisture and humidity levels are increased in a structure that has had water damage. Conditions that encourage mold growth are:

  • Food source. Molds feed on organic materials in a structure: wood, paper, drywall, insulation, natural fibers, and indoor dirt that often has organic matter in it.
  • Temperature. The common molds found in buildings generally grow best in typical building temperatures between 68° and 86° F. Some molds can grow at very cold or very hot temperatures.
  • Moisture. Most molds need lots of moisture, but some molds can survive in relative humidity’s as low as 65%. These molds are a particular problem to the restoration industry. To reduce mold growth, indoor relative humidity should be maintained below 60%.

What Causes Microbial Growth in Oregon City Area Homes?

7/26/2017 (Permalink)

Microbial growth in garage ceiling cavity.

Are you experiencing microbial growth in your home?

Microbes are a vital part of the ecosystem and necessary for life. Microbes are everywhere, even within our indoor environments, but under certain conditions they also may become a threat to human health. Microbial growth in indoor environments should be controlled. Microbes are living organisms that pollute our environment, contaminating the air or water.

Microbes include viruses, bacteria and fungi.

  • Fungi are organisms that digest materials in their surroundings to get nutrients rather than eating (like animals) or making food (like plants). Fungi are typically multicellular, meaning they have many cells.
  • Bacteria live in soil, water, and organic matter. Like fungi, bacteria absorb surrounding materials, but bacteria are normally single celled.
  • Viruses are the simplest microbes and lack many of the abilities of bacteria and fungi. Viruses grow, multiply, and cause diseases in living things. They can only grow and multiply inside a living entity.

Where Could Mold Be Hiding in My Oregon City Home or Business?

2/20/2017 (Permalink)

Where does mold like to hide?

Mold spores exist virtually everywhere, and can especially be a problem in the wet climate of the Pacific North West. It is no surprise that mold may be hiding in your home or business, even when you maintain a clean environment. Where are some places mold is likely hiding, you ask? SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy may have some answers:

Kitchen

  • Under your sink: A leaky pipe may go unnoticed, creating a dark, wet environment that mold thrives in. Be sure to periodically check for leaks.
  • In your garbage can: With all the food waste and miscellaneous liquids that make their way into your garbage, it isn’t unlikely that some of it could make its way through the trash liner into the trash can. Make sure to wipe it down when you notice grime starting to build up.
  • Under your fridge: The drip pan under your refrigerator can collect excess water, and if left untreated, mold can form. Clean out the drip pan periodically.

Bathroom

  • Under lids and bottoms of shower products: Moisture may become trapped under lids and underneath shower products. Anywhere there’s moisture, there could be mold!
  • Inside of bath toys: Water could become trapped inside of bath toys, especially squeak toys. Make sure toys are completely dry before putting them away.
  • Under your sink: A leaky pipe may go unnoticed, creating a dark, wet environment that mold thrives in. Be sure to periodically check for leaks.
  • Leaks or crack in bathtub/shower: If there is opening for water to enter, it is possible there is mold growth within the shower or tub.

Living Room

  • Under carpets: Spills or leaks soak into the carpet and carpet pad, making a moist environment that mold loves!
  • Chimney: The spaces between bricks in chimneys are hotspots for moisture and dirt, two things that mold loves.
  • Window seals: The best of window seals may still contain mold growth.

Other Places to Check:

  • Basement
  • In washing machines
  • Under carpets
  • Leather car seats
  • Inside walls

If you have checked all of these places but still suspect mold growth in your home, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy to set up an inspection.
