BBQ safety tips from the NFPA:

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

Uncertain if it's Mold? Call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy For An Inspection!

1/23/2019 (Permalink)

If you believe you've found Mold Growth but not sure, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy today!

Any home or commercial property can quickly become infested with mold if a source of water is present. Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. Since mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should call us to inspect your Oregon City home if you suspect you have a mold problem. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to re-mediate your mold infestation.

Microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible.

Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and they may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Let your nose lead the way. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

How Do I Know If I Have Mold in my Canby Home?

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

One of the many questions SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy gets on a regular basis is “How do I know if I have mold?”

Mold requires moisture and a food source to grow such as wallpaper, drywall or other organic building materials. In most cases, mold grows from having high humidity in your home or business, a non-ventilated bathroom or a recent water loss. However, if you believe that you do have mold growing in your home or business it is best to have a qualified environmental lab take samples. An environmental lab will be able to explain the testing process and provide results based off of the samples taken from your home. Based off of those results, they provide recommendations on how the mold would need remediation. Then, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy can take those results and recommendations to properly re-mediate the home or business of any microbial growth.

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy has the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at (503) 655-7735 available 24/7!

Every Second Counts During a Fire

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Fire experts agree; people have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late to get out.

In a matter of moments, a small flame can become a major fire, making it critical to be prepared and have an escape plan in place.  The American Red Cross suggests that families have a developed and practice a home fire escape plan. Here are a few suggestions to help you and your family to develop an emergency escape plan:

  • Draw a map of each level—Show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure that all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.
  • Consider escape ladders—This is something to consider for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.
  • Choose an outdoor meeting place—Make sure the meeting place is a safe distance in front of your home, where everyone can meet after they’ve escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
  • Teach children—Teach them how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone in your home, with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.
  • Practice makes perfect—Practice your fire escape plan during the day and at nighttime, at least twice a year.

Fire Damage Restoration in Your Redland Home

8/20/2018 (Permalink)

Redland Fire Damage Restoration

A fire can be devastating to any Redland home, causing severe fire damage, affecting its look and value. The restoration process is complex and requires the services of fire remediation experts like SERVPRO of Oregon City / Sandy.

The Fire Restoration Process

There are several techniques used to restore a home after a fire. The main goals are to remove anything that cannot be salvaged, extract all excess water, thoroughly dry everything and rebuild all damaged areas.

Water and Mold Issues

One of the effects of fire damage is the water left over after the fire is out. Furniture, drywall, floors, and carpets are soaked and provide a prime breeding ground for mold and mildew. SERVPRO utilizes large fans and powerful dehumidifiers to dry out your home in preparation for cleaning and rebuilding.

The Cooling and Heating System

The filter and coils of an HVAC system of a home are often blocked by soot and particulates from a fire. The parts must be replaced, and the cost depends on the amount of damage caused by smoke and heat. The ductwork must also be checked for soot buildup as it will cause problems if not removed.

Rebuilding the Home

A home that is left structurally unsound by fire damage will need to be reinforced and rebuilt. While this can done through independent contractors, the SERVPRO Oregon City / Sandy remediation service team can take care of the rebuilding process, reducing stress and worry for the homeowner.

Removal of Damaged Items

Part of the fire restoration process is the removal of anything that cannot be saved. If smoke-damaged items are allowed to remain, they may contaminate the home. SERVPRO may be able to help with salvageable items or can make recommendations for their repair.

A fire is a sudden, disruptive life event and working with a professional fire remediation service like SERVPRO is the fastest way to clean and restore a home. Our experts will get things back to normal with minimal stress to the homeowner and will often cost less than hiring additional contractors. Most home insurance policies will pay for at least part of the remediation costs.

Different Types of Mold

8/13/2018 (Permalink)

From the Ordinary

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Even though some forms of mold can pass value to our lives, other forms of mold can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusion can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide a food source for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health hazard for your family and pets.

You never want to discover a water damage in your home, but the unfortunate reality is that many homeowners will have to deal with this problem at some point. How you handle the water damage is important because a fast response may minimize the chance of mold growth in your home. There are a few steps that you can take when you discover water damage in your home.

Stop the Flow of Water

In some instances, you will not be able to stop the flow of water into the property. For example, if there is a major flood related to a severe thunderstorm, floodwaters may rise all around the property, and you may not have any way to stop the flow of water. On the other hand, if the flood is related to a damaged pipe in the home, you may be able to turn off the main water valve to stop the flow of water. You can also call a plumber so that the repair work on the pipe can be completed and they can assist you in finding the source of the leak.

Determining the Category of Water Damage

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

IICRC S500 Standard Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration defines three categories of water. Category refers to the type of water affecting the structure.

A Category I loss is where water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose substantial risk from dermal, ingestion or inhalation exposure.

A Category II loss is when water contains a significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. Category II water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms. Examples of Category II are: Discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, overflows from washing machines, overflows from toilet bowls on the room side of the trap with some urine.

Category III water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed. Examples of Category III water are: Sewage, Flood water, and other contaminated water entering or affecting the indoor environment, such as wind-driven rain from hurricanes, tropical storms or other weather-related events.

Pool Safely Tips and Facts from Your Local SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy

When summer brings the heat crashing into your daily routine, a pool is a great way to cool off and break up the dog days of summer.

Swimming pools and other water features on your property require regular maintenance and awareness of safety when friends and family, particularly small children, are swimming in your pool.

If your pool causes water damage to your Redland property, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy has a team of highly trained professionals who can restore your property back to pre-damage condition.

Don’t forget to be safe! Parents should be supervising any young children who don’t have strong swimming skills. Most drowning deaths among young children happen at times when parents are nearby, but the children are not properly supervised. Never leave your child or their friends unattended around water. Infants and children under the age of 2 can drown in as little as one inch of water. Enrolling your children in year-round swim lessons at your local swimming pool is the best way to prevent drowning accidents in the future.

Mold Found In Oregon City Home

6/4/2018 (Permalink)

Preventing mold from spreading throughout your Redland home

It only takes a small water leak, or even excess humidity, for mold to form in your Oregon City home or business. Then, mold can spread quickly through the property in as little as 48 hours. Mold can produce allergens and irritants, and it has the potential to cause other health effects.

Consider these facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

Preventing mold from spreading throughout your Sandy home

It only takes a small water leak, or even excess humidity, for mold to form in your Sandy home or business.

Sewage Overflow In Clackamas County Home

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy can help when sewage backup strikes your home

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. There are three major types of contaminated water:

Category 1:

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

Category 2:

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3:

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible. We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business.

Generator Safety for Oregon City and Sandy Residents

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

We want to make sure you are safe during the next storm power outage

If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below from American Red Cross:

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure, such as under a tarp help up on poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
  • Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can’t be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
  • Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

If your home or business is damaged due to a storm, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy! We have the training, tools, and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”

The Science of Drying Your Oregon City Property

3/6/2018 (Permalink)

Do you know the science SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy uses to dry out your home or business?

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy Professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chance of any secondary damages. If your business suffers from water damage, your local SERVPRO professionals will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether that materials are drying
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material- but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason, the professionals at SERVPRO have been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy also state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The bottom line? Your local SERVPRO have the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at (503) 655-7735!

Mold Prevention in the Beavercreek Area

2/27/2018 (Permalink)

Have you ever gotten mold in your home or business?

The kitchen is one of the most susceptible areas of the house to mold growth and it is very easy for mold to occur there if preventative actions are not taken. It is important to keep kitchens mold free because this is the same space in which food is prepared and consuming mold can be harmful. Preventing mold from growing in your kitchen is quite simple and it only takes a few preventative actions to ensure that your kitchen is safe, otherwise, you may need a professional mold remediation service like SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy.

The kitchen has a higher level of moisture in it than most other rooms of the house and as a result, surfaces such as the wall may become moldy. If there is some mold growth on the wall, make sure to remove it and keep an eye on that area as mold is likely to grow back in the same spot if the humidity rises again.

  • One option for preventing mold growth on the walls is using mold resistant paint which is water resistant and will prevent mold from penetrating through the painted layer. Adding mold resistant paint to your kitchen will also rejuvenate the look of the kitchen walls.
  • Another way to prevent mold from growing in your kitchen is to make sure your kitchen is dry and free of standing water. As you do the dishes or clean up the kitchen, water can get into small spaces around the sink which increases the risk of mold. It is important to dry the water from these hidden places as they are the most likely places for mold to grow with or without the excess water. After you clean your kitchen, use a separate towel to dry the water from the counters, cracks, floor, and other areas that are wet.
  • Humidity is another common cause of mold growth and limiting the humidity within the kitchen will greatly decrease the risk. The best way to keep the humidity down within the kitchen is by opening the windows and making sure there is always good ventilation. It is important to remember that excess moisture, standing water, or high humidity is at the root of every mold outbreak and the key to keeping your kitchen mold free is eliminating each of these sources. Keeping mold out of your kitchen will not only contribute to a cleaner space but also make it a safer place to prepare food.

If you do happen to find more mold than you can safely clean yourself, contact a professional such as SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy.

Frozen Pipe Prevention Tips for Your Property in Clackamas County

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

There is never a good time to experience a frozen pipe burst, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy is here to help you prevent this from happening!

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk of frozen pipes, which can create major disaster at your home or property.

Frozen pipes:

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.  To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

If you experience a water loss from a broken pipe or winter weather, remember to call your friends at SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy!

Have Ice Dams Affected your Clackamas County Hotel?

1/16/2018 (Permalink)

Do you know what ice dams are?

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sign of an ice dam, according to Travelers.com. To spot ice dams inside, “check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along the ceiling of exterior walls of your house. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water had penetrated the roof membrane.“ Removing an ice dam as soon as it is found is vital to help prevent damage to your property and can be done using heated cables, a roof shovel, or calcium chloride ice melter.

If winter weather causes water damage to your property, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy is only a call away, 24/7, ready to restore to preloss condition!

How to Prevent Mold from Growing on Your Sandy Property

1/9/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growth can be common in Oregon; do you know how to prevent it?

Any home or commercial property can quickly become infested with mold if a source of water is present. Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. Some household situations that lead to mold growth include:

  1. Clogged gutters and downspouts
  2. Leaky plumbing
  3. Leaky roofs
  4. Using hot water without venting the steam to outdoor air.

Also, when indoor air is warmer than outdoor air, moisture can collect on cold surfaces like single pane windows, uninsulated walls, pipes and roofs.

Ways of preventing household mold:

  • Install double-pane windows or insulation to keep moisture from collecting on cold surfaces.
  • Inspect and repair leaks in roofs, gutters, foundations and plumbing.
  • If you rent, consider taking pictures of moisture problems and documenting the situation with your landlord.

Winter Weather Prevention Tips for Your Clackamas County Apartment Complex

12/12/2017 (Permalink)

Does your Oregon City apartment complex suffer from the devastating effects of winter weather?

Are you prepared for the coming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your property if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damages and interior water
  • Inspect the property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces, and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.

When winter weather strikes, call your local SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy to strike back!

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering flood damage. In fact, nearly 25% of last year’s claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in moderate to low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $6 billion in annual losses in the U.S. Flooding can also result from plumbing failures, frozen pipes and damaged structures. Flood damage can affect your business operation in a variety of ways and can range in size from being isolated to a single room to entire floors being fully submerged.

Knowing how to prepare and deal with potential flooding in advance can affect how much of your property can be restored and how much has to be replaced. Below are prevention, mitigation and restoration tips to follow until help arrives:

Flood Prevention Tips:

  • Determine if your property is in a floodplain.

How to Prepare Your Business for Winter Weather in Oregon City

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

Have you ever had a frozen pipe burst or ice dam in your business in Clackamas County?

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. To try and prevent pipe bursts from happening and other winter weather mishaps, check out the following tips for preparing your business for winter weather.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause person injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate floor hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Ask your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business.

Commons Reasons Why Your Basement Floods in Sandy, OR

11/21/2017 (Permalink)

Have you inspected your home for these common basement flood causes?

Any disaster that hits your home can be devastating, that is why SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy is here to help! We are faster to any disaster and have highly trained technicians to help restore your home back to its preloss condition. The following are common reasons your basement can flood:

  1. Unsuitable Locations for Your Home: One of the most typical causes of basement flooding is that the house has been constructed on an unsuitable site. Houses are usually built on sloped terrains, allowing accumulated water to drain.
  2. Clogged gutters or misdirected water: Gutter downspouts should dispense water at least six to 10 feet away from your home, sometimes farther depending on the type of soil you have. If it is clay soil, you might be safe at five feet from the home. If your soil is sandy, consider going even farther than 10 feet.
  3. Groundwater: The complicated route of water runs in front of our eyes in rivers, lakes, streams and swamps, as well as out of sight beneath our feet.
  4. Heavy rains or melting snow: These weather events may seem obvious, but they can surprise homeowners because storm water and melting snow can travel hundreds of miles and come to affect local rivers and watersheds. You can reduce the surprise factor by tuning in to the regional weather reports.
  5. Sump pump failure. When people live where there is lots of water in the ground, the homes often have a pump built into the basement floor. Pumps constantly work to move water out and keep it away from the basement. Like any piece of equipment, they fail or break and require regular inspection, maintenance and repair when needed.

If you ever have flooding in your basement, call the pro’s at SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy today at (503) 655-7735!

Ah, the holidays; A fun, cheery time of year! We string lights, decorate desks, and even set up trees in the office. Have you thought about where you place the tree in relation to a heat source? Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather in Oregon City

11/1/2017 (Permalink)

How to prepare your home for winter weather!

Winter storms can cause power outages that last for days. They can make roads and walkways extremely dangerous or impassable and close or limit critical community services such as public transportation, child care, health programs and schools. With last year’s crazy winter, it might not be a bad idea to prepare your home for snowstorms or extreme cold before it happens.

Prepare your home:

  • Make sure your home is well insulated and that you have weather stripping around your doors and window sills to keep the warm air inside.
  • Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector.
  • Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety
  • Learn how to shut off water valves (in case a pipe bursts).
  • Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.

Whether your home gets damaged from rainwater, storm damage, or snow and ice, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy is here to help! Contact us any time of day or night at (503) 655-7735!

Have You Found Mold in Your Redland Home or Business?

10/9/2017 (Permalink)

What Causes Mold in Clackamas County Commercial or Residential Structures?

Molds can germinate in a warm, moist environment where a food source is present. How fast growth occurs depends on the combination of conditions. Spores can begin to grow after only 12 hours in some conditions and some can grow into colonies in 24 to 48 hours. Houses offer a large food supply—drywall, wood, insulation, indoor dirt, and paper. When these materials become damp or wet, settled spores can become growing molds. Water damages offer opportunities for molds to grow and multiply, since moisture and humidity levels are increased in a structure that has had water damage. Conditions that encourage mold growth are:

  • Food source. Molds feed on organic materials in a structure: wood, paper, drywall, insulation, natural fibers, and indoor dirt that often has organic matter in it.
  • Temperature. The common molds found in buildings generally grow best in typical building temperatures between 68° and 86° F. Some molds can grow at very cold or very hot temperatures.
  • Moisture. Most molds need lots of moisture, but some molds can survive in relative humidity’s as low as 65%. These molds are a particular problem to the restoration industry. To reduce mold growth, indoor relative humidity should be maintained below 60%.

If you have spotted mold in your home or business and are in need of remediation, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy today!

What to Do Before and After a Flood in Clackamas County

10/3/2017 (Permalink)

With the rainy season making its way into town, have you given any thought to if your commercial property  is prepared for a floodingfrom heavy rain? SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy wants to make sure you’re prepared in the event a disaster happens. The following gives tips on what to do before and after a flood.

BEFORE A FLOOD:

If an advanced Flood Warning had been issued, there are several precautions that can be taken to help minimize damage to certain areas in your business:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical equipment and appliances.
  • Move vehicles out of low lying parking garages.
  • Raise elevators from bottom floor.

AFTER A FLOOD:

Safety first!

  • Account that all employees are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.
  • If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for rescuers.
  • While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.
  • Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains).
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
  • Return only when authorities indicate is it safe.

Does My Home Along the Willamette River Have a Water Leak?

9/6/2017 (Permalink)

Water Alarm

Do you know how to spot a water leak?

You never expect a water leak in your home, but it’s good to be prepared and know what to do in case it happens! Sometimes, leaks can go undetected due to where they happen in the home (inside walls, under floor, or in your crawlspace). The following tips can help you determine if a leak is present, whether you can see it or not!

  • Watch your water bill for unexpectedly high usage. High water usage could be a sign of a problem.
  • Use no water for two hours. Read your water meter before and after this period. If this reading is not the same, you likely have a leak somewhere.
  • Check your toilet by placing food coloring in the toilet tank. In 15 minutes or less, if the colored water is in the toilet bowl without flushing, there is probably a leak.
  • Fix leaks and drips as soon as you see them.
  • Use water leak alarms and automatic water shut off systems to catch leaks quickly.

In the event that you have a water leak and need mitigation, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy! Our highly trained technicians will be happy to help get your home back to its preloss condition.

There is an 80 percent reduction in the risk of occupants dying in a fire when fire sprinklers are present. Additionally, there is a 70 percent reduction in direct property damage per fire.* On top of reducing fire damages, fire sprinklers are cost effective. A report commissioned by the Fire Protection Research Foundation places the average national cost of installing sprinklers in new homes at $1.35 per sprinklered square foot, or about one percent of the total construction cost.

What Causes Microbial Growth in Oregon City Area Homes?

7/26/2017 (Permalink)

Microbial growth in garage ceiling cavity.

Are you experiencing microbial growth in your home?

Microbes are a vital part of the ecosystem and necessary for life. Microbes are everywhere, even within our indoor environments, but under certain conditions they also may become a threat to human health. Microbial growth in indoor environments should be controlled. Microbes are living organisms that pollute our environment, contaminating the air or water.

Microbes include viruses, bacteria and fungi.

  • Fungi are organisms that digest materials in their surroundings to get nutrients rather than eating (like animals) or making food (like plants). Fungi are typically multicellular, meaning they have many cells.
  • Bacteria live in soil, water, and organic matter. Like fungi, bacteria absorb surrounding materials, but bacteria are normally single celled.
  • Viruses are the simplest microbes and lack many of the abilities of bacteria and fungi. Viruses grow, multiply, and cause diseases in living things. They can only grow and multiply inside a living entity.

If you have questions regarding microbial growth in your home, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy today at (503) 655-7735!

Help! My Toilet Overflowed in Redland!

7/17/2017 (Permalink)

What type of water overflow do you have in your home or business?

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination. Luckily, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy is here to help!

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow. It can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated.

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Do You Have a Pool for Your Pet in the Sandy Area?

7/12/2017 (Permalink)

Our furry family loves swimming too!

Cooling off in the pool is a great way to escape the summer heat, but our pets need supervision to stay safe around swimming pools. The following will explain the signs of heat stroke in dogs and cats, health tips for swimming, and what do you once your furry friends get out of the pool.

Heat Stroke:

Dogs:

  • Dogs don’t sweat and can’t regulate their body temperature.
  • They also don’t handle heat well.

Cats-:

  • Don’t handle heat well
  • They are able to sweat through their foot pads
  • Body temperatures over 105°F are dangerous and require immediate care

Signs of heat stroke:

  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Restlessness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Red tongue or gums
  • Lethargy or weakness

Preventing Poolside Heat Stroke:

  • Provide a shaded area
  • Have fresh and clean water available
  • Something for your pet to lie on, concrete or a wooden deck can get hot and burn their paws

Health Tips:

  • Swimming is excellent exercise for pets, but don’t assume they know how to swim right away.
  • Don’t let your pet drink pool water; the chemicals can be harmful to them.
  • Get goggles for dogs to protect their eyes.

Out of the pool:

  • Wash the pool chemicals off your pet with fresh water
  • Clean and dry out their ears to prevent infections
    • Use soft cotton balls
    • Dogs with floppy ears are more likely to get infections

Keeping Pets Safe in Oregon City House Fires

6/29/2017 (Permalink)

Sandy home fire tips to keep your furry family safe!

July 15, 2017 is National Pet Fire Safety Day! The following are tips to prevent fires that pets may cause and what to have to be prepared for an emergency.

Prevention:

  • Extinguish open flames: Pets are generally curious and investigate open flames such as candles.
  • “Baby proof” your home: When your pet is left unattended, consider keeping them confined from potential fire It is advised to keep pets in a crate or behind baby gates to secure the area. Some pets, especially puppies and kittens, will chew electrical cords or loose wire when left alone.
  • Remove or lock stove knobs: According to the National Fire Protection Association, a stove or cooktop is the #1 piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire.
  • Remove glass water bowls from wooden decks: The rays of sun, when filtered through glass water bowl, may ignite the wooden deck below. Instead, use bowls made from ceramic or stainless steel.

Be prepared for an emergency:

  • Get a rescue alert sticker: These stickers should be placed on a front-facing window, and will alert rescue workers of the presence of pets in your home.
  • Arrange a safe place to house your pets after an emergency: Local and state safety and health regulations do not allow pets to be housed in Red Cross Disaster shelters. Keep a list of pet friendly places to stay. These could be with: friends, relatives, pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, or veterinarians.
  • Make sure your pet is wearing proper identification: There is a chance your pet may be lost following a disaster. Make sure your pet wears up to date contact information at all times.

Make an emergency preparedness kit:

Have a kit made and keep it in a safe place, either by the door or in your car. Your kit should include supplies for up to seven days.

  • Medication and medical records
  • Leashes, hardness or carrier
  • Current photo in case your pet gets lost
  • Bedding and toys
  • Bowls, cat litter, and litter pan
  • Emergency contact information
  • Food, bottled water, and a can opener

An extremely important part of boating safety is to use your common sense. This means operating at a safe speed at all times and staying alert, Also, be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, which have been placed there to ensure your safety.

  1. Have an Assistant

Make sure more than one person on board is familiar with all aspects of your boat’s handling, operations, and general boating safety. If the primary navigator is injured or incapacitated in any way, it’s important to make sure someone else can to get everyone else back to shore.

  1. Create a Float Plan

Whether you choose to inform a family member or staff at your local marina, always be sure to let someone else know your float plan. This should include where you’re going and how long you’re going to be gone.

  1. Wear or Bring Lifejackets

Many drowning can be prevented by wearing a lifejacket. Make sure that each member on the boat has an assigned and fitted lifejacket aboard before getting out on the water.

  1. Avoid Alcohol

Practice boating safety at all times by saving the alcohol for later.

If you’re going to be in and around the water, proper boating safety includes knowing how to swim. Local organizations, such as the American Red Cross and others, offer training for all ages and abilities. Check to see what classes are offered in your area.

Tips on Firework Safety in Oregon

6/6/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Oregon City and Sandy Hope You Have Fun and Avoid Fires This Fourth Of July!

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause an estimated 18,500 fires a year. Many of these fires could have been avoided by taking the proper safety precautions!

The best way to stay safe this firework season is to go to a firework show put on by professionals. If you can't resist  lighting some off at home, here are the recommended safety tips from National Council on Firework Safety:

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework.  Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
  • FAA regulations PROHIBIT the possession and transportation of fireworks in your checked baggage or carry-on luggage.
  • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.

From all of us at SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy, we wish you a very fun and SAFE Fourth of July!

Stay Safe Sandy! Campfire Safety Tips 2017!

6/1/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy wants to keep you safe this camping season

It's that time of the year again, camping season! SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy wants to keep you and your family safe by providing some tips on how to pick a campfire spot, prepare and build your fire, and extinguish it!

How to Pick a Campfire Spot

  1. DO NOT build a campfire if the campground, area or event rules prohibit them.
  2. DO NOT build a campfire in hazardous, dry conditions.
  3. Find Out if the campground has an existing fire ring or fire pit.
  4. If there is not an existing fire pit, and pits are allowed, choose a site at least 15 feet from tent walls, shrubs, trees or other flammable objects. Beware of low-hanging branches.
  5. Choose an open, level location away from fuels such as logs, brush or decaying leaves.
  6. Take wind, and its direction, into account when choosing the site. Choose a spot that’s protected from gusts.

How to Prepare your Campfire Pit

  1. Clear a 10-foot-diameter area around the site. Remove any grass, twigs, leaves and firewood.
  2. Dig a pit in the dirt, about a foot deep.
  3. Circle the pit with rocks.
  4. Your campfire pit is built and ready for building a campfire!

How to Build Your Campfire

  1. Make sure you have a source of water, a bucket and shovel nearby at all times.
  2. Gather three types of wood from the ground. Never cut whole trees or branches, dead or alive. Live materials won’t burn, and you’ll be damaging the forest. Dead standing trees often are homes for birds and other wildlife.
    1. Tinder: Small twigs and dry leaves grass and needles.
    2. Kindling: Sticks smaller than 1″ around.
    3. Fuel: Larger pieces of wood. Keep these stacked upwind, away from the fire.
  3. Loosely pile a few handfuls of tinder in the center of the fire pit.
  4. Ignite the tinder with a match or lighter.
  5. Wait until the match is cold, and discard it into the fire.
  6. Add kindling and fuel, the larger firewood, as it grows and to keep it going.
  7. Keep the fire small and under control.

How to Extinguish your Campfire

  1. Allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if possible.
  2. Pour lots of water on the fire. Drown ALL embers, not just the red ones. Pour until hissing sound stops.
  3. If you do not have water, stir dirt or sand into the embers with a shovel to bury the fire.
  4. With your shovel, scrape any remaining sticks and logs to remove any embers. Make sure that no embers are exposed and still smoldering.
  5. Continue adding water, dirt or sand and stirring with a shovel until all material is cool.
  6. Remember: If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave. Pack it in, Pack it out. It is your responsibility to pack out everything that you packed in, including any trash.

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

1. Watch your cooking - Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.

2. Give space heaters space - Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.

3. Smoke outside - If you must smoke inside, have a sturdy, deep ashtray. Never smoke in bed.

4. Keep matches and lighters out of reach - Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.

5. Inspect electrical cords - Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

6. Be careful when using candles - Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

7. Have a fire escape plan - Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

8. Install smoke alarms - Install alarms on every level of your office or home and inside bedrooms. Interconnect them so they all sound at once.

9. Test smoke alarms - Test alarms once per month. Replace batteries once per year or as needed.

10. Install sprinklers - Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving your property.

Where Could Mold Be Hiding in My Oregon City Home or Business?

2/20/2017 (Permalink)

Where does mold like to hide?

Mold spores exist virtually everywhere, and can especially be a problem in the wet climate of the Pacific North West. It is no surprise that mold may be hiding in your home or business, even when you maintain a clean environment. Where are some places mold is likely hiding, you ask? SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy may have some answers:

Kitchen

  • Under your sink: A leaky pipe may go unnoticed, creating a dark, wet environment that mold thrives in. Be sure to periodically check for leaks.
  • In your garbage can: With all the food waste and miscellaneous liquids that make their way into your garbage, it isn’t unlikely that some of it could make its way through the trash liner into the trash can. Make sure to wipe it down when you notice grime starting to build up.
  • Under your fridge: The drip pan under your refrigerator can collect excess water, and if left untreated, mold can form. Clean out the drip pan periodically.

Bathroom

  • Under lids and bottoms of shower products: Moisture may become trapped under lids and underneath shower products. Anywhere there’s moisture, there could be mold!
  • Inside of bath toys: Water could become trapped inside of bath toys, especially squeak toys. Make sure toys are completely dry before putting them away.
  • Under your sink: A leaky pipe may go unnoticed, creating a dark, wet environment that mold thrives in. Be sure to periodically check for leaks.
  • Leaks or crack in bathtub/shower: If there is opening for water to enter, it is possible there is mold growth within the shower or tub.

Living Room

  • Under carpets: Spills or leaks soak into the carpet and carpet pad, making a moist environment that mold loves!
  • Chimney: The spaces between bricks in chimneys are hotspots for moisture and dirt, two things that mold loves.
  • Window seals: The best of window seals may still contain mold growth.

Other Places to Check:

  • Basement
  • In washing machines
  • Under carpets
  • Leather car seats
  • Inside walls

If you have checked all of these places but still suspect mold growth in your home, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy to set up an inspection.

Preventative Care for your Oregon City or Sandy, OR Home or Business

2/20/2017 (Permalink)

When the sun comes out, will your home or business be dry?

Now that winter weather is passing, it is the best time to inspect your home or building for weather-related damage. Snow and ice buildup, heavy rains and strong winds can all cause problems with your property. Roofs, gutters and landscapes are exterior elements that should be checked to guard against water damage. Remember to look in attics, basements or crawl spaces for visible signs of water intrusion. Make sure outside vents are clear of any obstruction to ensure proper air flow.

Ways to Prevent Water Damage:

  1. Clean and inspect gutters regularly.
  2. Keep downspouts clear of any blockages.
  3. Repair or replace roofing as needed.
  4. Be sure soffit vents are clean and unobstructed.
  5. Check for any cracks or peeling paint. These could indicate moisture retention.
  6. Fill low spots around building foundation with clean fill dirt.
  7. Create slope away from structure to drain runoff properly.
  8. Trim plants around building to avoid growth of mold or mildew.
  9. Make sure garden areas have adequate drainage.
  10. Apply a waterproofing coating to interior or exterior basement walls.

If you find a problem and need restoration help or want spring cleaning assistance, call SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy. We are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Don't be fooled by claims of "Mold Removal"

2/15/2017 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy we understand mold and mold growth. We have the training, expertise and quality equipment to remediate the mold in your home or business. For more information on the training our technicians receive go HERE.

Start the Year Off Right - Tips From SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy to Get Organized!

2/3/2017 (Permalink)

Does your Clackamas County Office need some sprucing up? Here are a few tips to get you started!

  1. Get rid of what you don't need. We tend to think everything is important and needs to be kept. Go through all your stuff and ask yourself: Does this item have unnecessary multiples? Does it have a purpose? Is it outdated? Did you even remember you had it before you started your cleaning? Do you really need it?
  2. Add more storage. Whether it's a shelving system or a filing cabinet, adding more storage to your office will give everything a place to go. Don't go overboard or else you might end up with even more clutter!
  3. Make sure everything has a place. If things don't have a place to go, they will likely end up cluttering up your desk.
  4. Address your problem areas. Everyone has that drawer full of random stuff that has no where to go. Organize it by putting things in a more permanent home and adding some drawer dividers.
  5. Hide your cables. Cables are often a huge source of office clutter. Get rid of the problem by adding a cable box, zip tie your cords together, hide them with cord concealers and hide them behind a desk or other furniture when you can.
  6. File paperwork daily. How many times have you walked in to an office and to see stacks of un filed paperwork all over? It looks horrible and makes it hard to find anything. Make sure to file away paperwork every day to avoid this.
  7. Sort your desktop icons. Digital clutter can be just as bad as real life clutter. Put all the extra documents and pictures on your desktop into a folder. Put everything you don't need anymore into the "trash".
  8. Disinfect and and clean. With all the stuff we have to get done in a day, it's easy to forget about something like disinfecting your office.  Do it yourself or hire a professional to get rid of those lingering germs!

Whether its giving tips on how to declutter or providing 24/7 emergency services, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy is here to help!

Restoration Technologies at SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy

1/20/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy has the technology to get the job done!

The past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.

  • An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation

Water Extraction Equipment

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.

  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers causes moisture to evaporate at a faster pace
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Odor Removal and Deodorization

Water and fire damage often causes powerful odors. The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

  • Air scrubbers
  • Thermal foggers and deodorization agents

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Anti-Microbial Treatments

The use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.

  • Deodorization products control odors from excessive moisture.
  • Disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

Toilet Overflow or Sewage Backup Emergency in Oregon City

1/20/2017 (Permalink)

Toilet Overflow or Sewer Backup?
Call Today (503) 665-7752

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy has specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

24 Hour Emergency Service

Let SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy Clean Your Drapes and Blinds This Year

1/20/2017 (Permalink)

Begin the New Year with a clean house, starting with your drapes and blinds!

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy excels at cleaning fine fabrics and intricate pieces using wet or dry cleaning methods as required. We carefully inspect and test fabrics to determine which of our System’s five cleaning methods is best suited to your fabrics. We use state-of-the-art equipment designed specifically for cleaning fine fabrics.

A good rule-of-thumb is to clean drapes approximately every two years. A recent survey by SERVPRO disclosed that the average customer believes drapes should be cleaned when they look dirty. Depending on your heating system, the amount of smokers in the home, and other factors, drapes may not show soil for two to six years. The oily atmospheric soil will gradually cause the fabric to deteriorate. Often, direct sunlight is unjustly blamed for this. You may triple the life of your draperies through professional cleaning, which is relatively inexpensive compared to replacement costs.

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy has an exclusive process of dry cleaning draperies right in your home. There’s no need to have your home or office exposed while your draperies are out being cleaned. We inject a specially formulated solvent into your drapery under pressure and extract the chemical, leaving your drapes clean. This special process results in no damage or shrinkage to the material. Most importantly, you will get quality cleaning at a reasonable price.

1/18/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor.

SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy's smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Different Types of Smoke:

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Propane Grills in Oregon City

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

Winter Grilling in Oregon City!

Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a Light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you smell gas while cooking immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it. FACTS: July is the peak month for Grill fires – roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. But some people like to grill in the winter too.

Firework Safety Tips

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

Fireworks can be great fun. Unfortunately, every year, people get hurt because they fool around with fireworks. Last year over 900 people required hospital treatment from accidents involving fireworks. Make sure you’re not one of them by following these few simple rules.

Never play with fireworks - They are explosives and can hurt you.

Only adults should light or hold fireworks.

When you are watching fireworks stand well back.

Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.

Fireworks will frighten your pets, so keep your pets safely indoors.

If you are given a sparkler: Always wear gloves. Hold it at arm’s length. When your sparkler goes out, DON’T TOUCH IT. It could still burn you, so put it in a bucket of water.

How to Prevent Mold in your Oregon City Kitchen

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

The kitchen is one of the most susceptible areas of the house to mold growth and it is very easy for mold to occur there if preventative actions are not taken. It is important to keep kitchens mold free because this is the same space in which food is prepared and consuming mold can be harmful.

The kitchen has a higher level of moisture in it than most other rooms of the house and as a result, surfaces such as the wall may become moldy. If there is some mold growth on the wall, make sure to remove it and keep an eye on that area as mold is likely to grow back in the same spot if the humidity rises again. One option for preventing mold growth on the walls is using mold resistant paint which is water resistant and will prevent mold from penetrating through the painted layer.

Basement flooded Oregon City

Basement flooded

Basements in Oregon City can be prone to flooding.

Water always runs from high to low ground, and this means that under the right circumstances your basement becomes an unwanted swimming pool. But where does the water come from?

  • One common culprit behind basement flooding is rain. Excessive amounts of rain in a short period of time can overload basement waterproofing systems, saturating the earth around your basement and then pushing in through foundation cracks.
  • Properly waterproofed basements and homes should have a tar sealant on both the inside and outside of foundation walls, in addition to what's known as "weeping tile." This tile pulls water away from your home to the local sewer system. If these systems fail because they can't handle the incoming water load, your basement will flood.
  • The slope of your lawn, also called the "grade," can co
  • If you have flood insurance, call your insurance provider. If you're not sure, check your plan. Some companies deliberately omit floods or "acts of God' and won't cover the replacement of any water-damaged items. Knowing this upfront is very important.
  • The insurance company will send out an adjuster to assess the damage, take a list of all the items and call in a professional. Whether you go with insurance or not, chances are you'll want to call an expert like SERVPRO of Oregon City/Sandy.
